The Classic Chaise Longue
The French style Chaise Longue (often called a chaise lounge in the USA) is a classic piece of french furniture typified by its asymetrical design. A typical chaise longue consists of a long padded seat base accompanied by a high padded side on which to lounge.
In the 19th Century, the classic chaise shape was ammended to include a partial back rest. This new form became known as a 'Fainting Couch' and was positioned at the top of stairways or as featured pieces in separate 'Fainting Rooms' (Source Wikipedia).
